                      Our president's Message 2009

Dear Perennial Gardeners:

Gardeners are optimists. We plant seeds, bulbs and plants with great expectations. Our yards change with the seasons and fall is the perfect time to take stock. Think about what plants to divide; where some plants may be moved; maybe even start new beds; and of course keep some heeled in for our plant sale. This year, like past years, we have many great programs and workshops to improve our abilities and inspire us. Our community involvement will continue with the children’s garden at the Hingham Library and may grow with The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts new directive titled Golden Days. Additionally, the federation offers programs to educate and encourage gardeners and arrangers. More will be discussed at meetings and check our website for details. New  for us is to attend a Norwell Garden Club Potluck on March 11th , where we will observe an associate from the MFA create an arrangement as an interpretation of a piece of art- just what each designer of Art in Bloom experiences. I hope each of you can make it.

I look forward to my first year as president and working with everyone to continue growing the club and developing our skills. We have a great club with many knowledgeable gardeners and hard working individuals. Thank you to all who have helped build our club. Thank you to all who keep it running so well.  Thank you to all for taking the time to attend our meetings and share your gardening successes and challenges.  It is always a pleasure to see each of you at our meetings!

Useful gardening links suggested by our members

The WWW Virtual Library  Gardening Links  (P. N.)

Dave's Garden http://davesgarden.com/
An immense website with thousands of contributors.   I especially like two sections: Plant Files and Garden Watchdog.  In Plant Files, you can search for information about a specific plant including pros & cons, and where to buy it.  Garden Watchdog reviews garden centers and catalogs, with comments about reliability & quality.  Since web links are often included, it's a fun place to browse for new catalogs. (T. C.)

A great resource for articles.  Something fun - scroll to the bottom of their home page for a Pronunciation Guide. Just click on a Latin name. (T. C.)

Includes fact sheets & services available through the UMASS Extension. (T. C.)

Ogden Nash:

My garden will never make me famous,
I'm a horticultural ignoramus.

Phyllis McGinley:

The trouble with gardening is that it does not remain an avocation. It becomes an obsession.

Thomas Cooper:

A garden is never so good as it will be next year

Margaret Atwood:

In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.
